Unit 10, Session 1

The Israelites Wanted a King (1 Samuel 7-10)

Hey Volunteer Team! This week we’re exploring 1 Samuel 8, where the Israelites demand a king to rule over them, rejecting God as their true King. Their desire for an earthly king reveals their discontentment and lack of trust in God’s provision. They wanted to be like the nations around them, forgetting how God had led and protected them. This mirrors how we too are tempted to place our hope in earthly things rather than God.

In this story, we see how the Israelites’ divided hearts point us to Jesus, who came to free us from the power of sin and reconcile us to God. When we trust in Christ, He gives us new hearts that worship Him alone as our true King. Let’s encourage the kids to see how Jesus' life, death, and resurrection set us free to follow the One who rules with power and love.
